A Letter; To: Stephenie Meyer
Torture.
That is the best and only way I can describe the emotion I feel right now. I cannot describe the selfish elation I experienced when I discovered the link to “Midnight Sun” that you yourself had posted. How sad I felt while reading your version of what went down with your manuscript. In all honesty, I considered not reading it (though even as I read your anguish filled words I was simultaneously contemplating how and where I could find a copy on the internet, knowing it wouldn't be hard), but I couldn't resist. More like couldn't help myself.
I'm a late fan, at 35 years of age discovering the novels and your authoring only in the midst of the pre-release hype preceding the movie. Once I began reading "Twilight" (a borrowed copy from my 16yr old daughter), I was hooked. Addicted would be more accurate. Having a more than full-time 12 hr a day job, a family of 5, taking online college courses, and still managing to finish the entire four-novel series in under 2 weeks time couldn't be described as anything less than addiction. I devoured each word, each sentence, each page as if they somehow filled me, yet not quite. I was always looking forward to each and every spare moment I could find to get more. And I was happy.
That is, until I reached the last word on the final page of the final book.
“Forever.”
I was more than just a little sad, more than just a little upset, I was in withdrawal. I not only felt the dull ache for “more, more, more“, but I felt a longing to be with the characters again, already missing the fact that I would no longer get to meet with them in my off moments and catch up with what was going on with their lives. Knowing full well even before I had reached that final page that I would start again from the very beginning so that I could visit with them once again, as if I were reliving old, happy memories with close friends.
Months went by. I saw the movie. Wonderful. But it only reignited the desires to be close with those characters once again. My daughter, who has a busier schedule than I, was still in the process of reading the books so I had the pleasure of sharing in her familiar excitement and pain of the goings on of the inhabitants of Forks, bonding over their stories and our likes and dislikes of each.
Still not enough.
My husband, unbeknownst to me, decided to rent “Twilight, The Movie” the other day. Joy… And pain, again. After watching it three times and once with the commentary on, it finally had to be returned to the red box and I was once again left to my own devices, trying to find a way to fill the void and satisfy the ache.
I resigned myself to web searches happily coming across stepheniemeyer.com and reading everything I could. Funny how the last page I finally clicked on was the first page that began this whole thing. There was the story behind the story of the stolen manuscript. There too was the answer to what I was looking for. The only thing that would satisfy the ache. I found it!
More…more…MORE!
“Midnight Sun.”
Old friends, familiar times, and joy, joy, joy! How similar, yet how completely different the story is this time. It’s old (in the best way), yet completely new, just as enthralling as the first time around. All of the old feelings, the emotions that kept me on the edge of my seat with a smile on my face and often simultaneously on the verge of tears there for me to experience once again with new life breathed into them. Brilliant!
But your story and the comments accompanying the link to your manuscript, they stick with me too; “I'd rather my fans not read this version of Midnight Sun. It was only an incomplete draft; the writing is messy and flawed and full of mistakes”. How Bella-like this statement is. You don’t even realize the beauty of your own words in their raw, unaltered form. I can assure you with all professional considerations aside, there is no embarrassment to be felt for what you have shared, the way you have shared it. I know I can’t be the only one to have said this, so get ready ’cause here it comes again; thank you!
And now here I am, on page 263 of the 264 page manuscript and I refuse to read any further. I refuse to put myself in the position I was in before, wanting and aching for more. At least I know this time that there is more. At least one page more if there are never any more than that.
I will hold out forever, if forever is how long it takes…if you never complete “Midnight Sun”. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it. Knowing that this time the end is in my control. Wishing that one day you will find it in you to reignite the spark that ignited the flames that became “The Twilight Series”. Praying that with that spark comes forgiveness for whoever committed the offense and illegally distributed “Midnight Sun“. Hoping that maybe this letter from me to you will make you reach for the match.
Waiting…
Forever. | ||||||

I agree these are the most amazing books. I could not wait to read the next one and was very sad to realize that I was to the end. I am 42 and have not found a book since I was a teenager that I could not wait to get back to. I can not wait till the 5th books comes and am using all of my patience for when Midnight sun comes out. What a gift Stephanie has. I hope that she does not let the person who leaked it ruin it for the rest of us. Make that person wait and buy it when it comes out. Thank you for sharing your gift with the rest of us.

I totally agree....I couldn't help but read the link to Midnight Sun.....I feel like I've been mourning Edward and Bella since I finished the books a week ago. ( I only started reading them about two weeks ago.) When I found the link I was so happy to have a little bit more to hold on to...and then that to was over.....and the sadness came again.....it's crazy how these books just take ahold of you and the characters find real meaning and you can't help but care and want to know more and more. I wish the story would go on forever....I need to feed this addiction I have for these characters....I'm hoping and praying for more.....I went and got The Host to try and get my mind off of the Twilight books and while it was good....I still find myself missing Edward and Bella....maby Stephenie will read this and if so I want to tell her Thank you....thank you so much, i hadn't picked up a book in over 4years and now I think I'll be reading every night....even if just trying to distract myself from the amazing world she created with the Twilight Series.

Hi - I am 62 years old and Stephanie Meyers has made me feel 17 again. I like the rest of you could not put the books down - I have read and re-read and, of course, watched Twilight over and over. I cannot wait for New Moon. I, too, felt like I betrayed Stephanie when I finally did read Midnight Sun, but I pray she will forgive who did this to her and not let it stop her from the beautiful flow of thoughts and words that she brings from dreams to paper. She is absolutely gifted. She has affected so many lives, young and old, with the creation of Edward and Bella and the other characters, places and music all inter-woven into the fantasy/reality life of love and passion. My 17 year old granddaughter and her friends love me. We have Twilight pajamma parties, we have taken a Volvo for a test drive and I have beautiful paintings of Edward and Bella and the Cullen family in my home. Stephanie, please continue making our lives "immortal" with your continuing legacy of the Cullens. Do not take them away from us. Karen Palmer

I can't tell you how relieved I was to read these letters. I'm in my 50s and had been only vaguely aware of the whole Twilight phenomenon until two weeks ago when my younger kids asked me to watch the movie with them. Since then I've read all four books and Midnight Sun, and am going through the exact same feeling of loss and withdrawal that the original poster described. I, too, have a somewhat over-loaded life -- single mother of two pre-teens, one of whom has autism; full time job in marketing; sole support of my kids; plus I'm trying to work my way through a broken heart in the aftermath of a relationship that was in its own way as unlikely and impossible as Bella and Edward, and nearly as magical as well. The series has been the one thing that has managed to distract me from the pain and confusion that situation has left in my life -- and oddly enough, it gave me inspiration to take a positive step toward getting what I wanted. So for so many reasons I am bereft at the thought of the having come to the end of the Cullen story. Fanfiction is my methadone right now -- but I am hoping that Ms.Myer will soon supply us all with our own personal brand of heroin one again! I am delighted however to find so many other women in my age group who feel the same way as I do about these characters and this story. I hope to chat more with you wonderful ladies.
BTW -- my name is also Isabella Marie, and I am still enough of a teenager to have been thrilled to see that Bella and I share the same name.

Kiaora (Kiwi for 'Hello') Everyone, I have read through what everyone has said... I to have read the series in the past month and have fallen in love with the characters (this I can say is an absolute FIRST TIME) I also fell into the trap of reading the draft unfinished unedited version of Midnight Sun.... I felt absolutely guilty when I read on the Stephanie.Meyer.com website of what had happened and went on a hunt for her myspace.com page to apologise for my involvement in this injustice only to find out that also on her website that she has closed this down. I have read through it twice and both times HOPING/WISHING/PRAYING that Stephanie would finish it as my thirst for Edwards perspective is dying to be quenched...
Fingers crossed...

Well the word 'Indefinitely' doesn't mean that its 100% not going to finish it, she loves her fans too much... I understand why she's hurt and why that would drain some of the writer energy when someone steals it... I just hope that in time and that she sees that her fans love her books and sees the world that she has created for them to finish it... She loves her fans and and I know she doesnt do this to hurt however I feel like I've been given half of a formula for a lifesaving antidote and until I know the rest am in quarantine seating waiting, dying of boredom.... I've read them 4 times (not as bad as some of my friends) however I still feel the story is unfinished like a christmas roast dinner without the roast... I havent gained all the flavours of the story and until that time, I will feel a little sad (nothing requiring meditation or pills for) hahahaha... Interesting to the previous post.... All the same... I AM DYING TO READ MIDNIGHT SUN...

Hi, I am 22 years old and I'm really glad to know that I'm not the only adult who is in love with the Twilight Series. I've always thought that it was only for kids and I felt like I was too old for the books. I am not as fast of a reader as many of you are, however when I start reading the books, I do have a hard time putting them down. I'm in the middle of Eclipse and I feel that I don't read as fast because I will be sad when the last page of Breaking Dawn comes. I really hope Stephanie decides to finish Midnight Sun. Honestly, I'm not sure if I want to read it or not yet. I think I might want to wait for her to decide to finish the book. I feel like I am betraying her for not just going out to buy the book when she finishes it. Yes, I said when, I have high hopes for her and I do believe she will finish the book, in her own time. So please Stephanie, don't let all of your fans down because of one person's bad judgement. Just have faith in your work again and do what you know, yourself, is just dying to do.

WOW! I too am happy to know I am not the only adult (almost 32 years old) who is completely obsessed and addicted to this saga! I didnt want to finish Breaking Dawn, and once I did, I just keep watching Twlight over and over. And going to youtube and watching fan videos. I want to see Midnight Sun finished as well! i really enjoyed the way Breaking Dawn ended, but I still feel like its open for more books! Books about the return of the Volturi and jacob and renesmee! Will Renesmee be like the half/half who witnessed for the Cullens? What about Renee? will she ever see Bella? I need more! I can't wait to see New Moon, but i need more! haha!

I was so happy to read these posts. I also can't get enough of this series. I saw the movie then got the first 2 books read each one in a day. Then bought the other 2. Also read them in 2 days. I can't get enough of Twilight. I rented the movie from Netflix a month ago and still have it. I also watched it with the commentary on. Every time I watch it, it gets me reading the books again. I have had them for 3 weeks and re-read them 3 more times. I like everyone else wants more. I'm 45 and so happy I'm not the only crazy one addicted to these books.

Please add to the Letter to Stephenie Meyer: I am 46 years old, and I am now reading the Saga for the 7th time. I cannot get enough. Like Kim, I love spending time with these characters and I miss them when I'm not reading with them. I read Midnight Sun also and am forever waiting for its completion. I go into withdrawals at work and I get depressed when I finish Breaking Dawn. The only thing that picks me up is knowing that I get to start over. I only wish I had the 5th book to add to the reading time. These characters are so real for me. I don't know how else to describe it. I know it's only fiction, but it's like being with friends everytime I read the story. I, too, will wait FOREVER for its completion. Thanks for sharing your talent with the world; please give us more!!! Waiting Patiently!!! (or, not) Karen

OMG!!! You have totally described everything I felt after reading the Twilight Saga!! After finding Midnight Sun on SM site, I read it so slowly and when it came down to the last 5 pages that are posted I stopped reading it for like 2 months. I was so scared of not knowing what to do next. How would I get my fix?? I was completely torn in two. I so hope she does finish it one day!

Twilight was the first book I've actually read all the way thru since I left high school back in '01. Once I read the first one, I had to read all four. The movie was great and all, but the books were absolutely fabulous. I really need you to finish Midnight Sun...I read what you had posted on www.stepheniemeyer.com and I'm addicted already. If you could make it into a saga, that'd be fantastic! Please, please, please...for us
Thank you | ||||||

I agree with everything that was said in this letter. I haven't been able to find any other book to hold my attention. I've read Midnight Sun, and I love it. I'm sitting here waiting like everyone else for you to find that spark and finish that book. I would also love for you to turn that into a saga as well. I would love to see all four books through Edwards eyes. His way of thinking and seeing things is so unique. I will continue to wait for you to finish this book.
